The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 computers for and helps remove infections by specific, prevalent malicious software—including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom. When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed. For Microsoft operating systems, Service Pack 1 is the natural evolution of the products from the RTM (release to manufacturing) milestone. Windows 7 is no exception to this rule, despite the company’s foray into standalone updates via Windows Update as an alternative to massive, cumulative service packs. And the wait is on for the first major upgrade to Microsoft’s latest Windows client and server platforms, with the software giant having offered no details on Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 SP1. The Redmond company is reportedly planning to release the first service pack for Windows 7 at the end of 2010, namely in the last quarter of this year.

Windows 7 customers that are configuring their accounts for automatic login will find that the operating system resents the Taskbar (Superbar) to the default configuration, Microsoft said. The same problem also affects users of Windows Server 2008 R2, according to the Redmond company, but customers that are running either of the two platforms now have a solution available to resolve the issue.

“When you restart the computer, any customizations that you made to the Taskbar are lost and the Taskbar is reset to its default settings,” the software giant stated. “This problem occurs because of a race condition between Windows Explorer and Taskhost.exe.”

It used to be that Notepad was a necessary evil because it started up quickly and let us catch a quick glimpse of plain text files. Now, there are a bevy of capable Notepad replacements that are just as fast, but also have great feature sets.

Before following the rest of this how-to, ensure that you’re logged into an account with Administrator access.

Note: The following instructions involve modifying some Windows system folders. Don’t mess anything up while you’re in there! If you follow our instructions closely, you’ll be fine.
